GENEVA (ILO News) – On Friday 4 October 2024, Mr Wilm Geurts, Director of International Affairs of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment of the Netherlands, presented the instrument of ratification of the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187) to the ILO Director-General, Mr. Gilbert Houngbo.

In depositing the instruments of ratification, Mr Geurts stated: “As a founding member of the organisation, the Netherlands and the ILO have shared the same goal for over a hundred years: advancing social justice and promoting decent work. International labour standards are vital to achieving this, as well as social dialogue between governments, employers, and workers. With the ratification of Convention No. 187, the Netherlands is pleased to have now ratified all 10 of the fundamental Conventions.  This ratification reaffirms our commitment to a modern and broadly supported system of international labour standards. The Netherlands attaches great importance to occupational safety and health and the Convention ties in well with our views that it is vital to consult the social partners when creating policies that affect them. Because we can only move forward towards social justice and decent work for all if we work together.”

When receiving the instrument of ratification, Mr. Houngbo, declared: “With this milestone ratification, the Netherlands has ratified all fundamental standards. The Netherlands is the sixth country to ratify Convention No. 187 this year, once again affirming a strong commitment to the fundamental principle and right of a safe and healthy working environment.  I sincerely welcome the Netherlands’ continued international leadership on this issue, and its dedication to social justice and the international labour standards system. “
