Trade Unions in Transformation

The ACTRAV Trade Unions in Transformation Programme aims to support trade unions in navigating the complex and rapidly changing world of work by helping them adapt to transformations, anticipate future challenges, and strengthen their role in advocating for workers' rights and social justice.

Through knowledge development, awareness-raising activities, training and strategic foresight, the ACTRAV Trade Unions in Transformation: Actors for Change Programme supports unions to adapt and engage in transformative action across different regions.

This Programme equips unions with essential resources and tools to support their own transformative journey, empowering unions to navigate challenges and build resilience while actively shaping their future in the shifting landscape of work

It is not the first time we are living a situation of crisis or multiple crises and it won’t be the last. Trade unions have shown resilience over the years, and I believe that trade unions have the capacity to continue adapting to changes in the world of work and in society overall. They have to continue playing a central role in building forward better and advancing inclusive human development and active citizenship, as well as in strengthening democracy and promoting social justice. (MH André, Director, ILO ACTRAV)

The Programme encompasses:

  • the development of knowledge materials: a number of thematic studies, regional background research, shorter thematic blogs, interviews, videos and an InfoStory and Webpage have been developed.
  • the organisation of national and (sub-)regional webinars and workshops: online and F-2-F seminars have been organized to exchange experiences and raise awareness among trade union leaders in the Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Southern Africa, Africa, Ethiopia, Latin America, and Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan, amongst others;
  • the exploration of futures thinking and strategic foresight: a number of studies, workshops and trainings have been organized to support trade unions strategic thinking. This has been documented in a blog: Trade unions anticipating alternative futures and paper: Using foresight to think and act upon an uncertain future world of work;
  • the organisation of training activities: in collaboration with the ILO Training Center in Turin (ITCILO), Global and Regional Workers Academies.
